Stiff at First. Yours in the End

Samurai Jeans makes denim for people who’d rather earn a pair than just buy one. We started because too many jeans are built to look worn in before you’ve worn them: pre-faded, pre-distressed, soft on day one and thin by month six. So we went the other way. Heavy cloth, tight stitching, and a cut that does one job properly, without an extra pocket or a trendy wash to distract from it.

That means a pair takes some patience. The denim is stiff when it’s new, and it should be. It softens and fades where you actually bend, sit, and carry things, until the creases belong to you and no one else. We test the way jeans really get treated: stitched seams pulled until they complain, rivets and hems checked after months of daily wear. We’d rather send back a bolt of fabric that looks great but wears wrong than put our name on it.

We make these for people who care about the details others skip, like how a pair ages and what it looks like after a year of being lived in. If you’d rather have jeans that get better the longer you keep them than ones that are perfect for a week, you already know what to look for.

Samurai Jeans 21oz Heavyweight

I was nervous about the stiffness at first, but the 21oz denim broke in around month three and now it’s the only thing I reach for. The weight feels like armor, not a burden.”

Samurai Jeans Indigo Work Shirt

“The chain-stitched hem is what sold me. After a year, the roping on the hem is exactly what I’d read about, and my tailor commented on the stitching before I even asked.”

Kenji A.

Samurai Jeans 15oz Selvedge

“Wore the same pair of Samurai Jeans nearly every day for eight months before the first wash. The fades at the knees and wallet corner look like they were drawn on, not worn in.”

Straight Answers for Day One and Year Two

Will it shrink after the first wash?

That depends on whether the fabric is pre-shrunk or unsanforized, which is stated on the product page. Unsanforized fabric can shrink noticeably, often around one size in the waist and a few centimeters in length. Pre-shrunk fabric changes much less. Reading the listing’s fabric details before ordering helps in choosing the right size.

How long does the break-in period take?

Stiff, heavy fabric usually softens over the first few weeks of regular wear, with creases forming at the knees, hips, and behind the knees. Visible fading patterns tend to take several months of consistent wear, and they follow the wearer’s habits, so no two pairs end up identical.

Will the dye rub off on other things?

Dark indigo dye commonly transfers in the early weeks, especially on light shoes, pale sofas, and white shirts. The effect fades after the first few washes. Wearing darker clothing and avoiding light upholstery during the break-in period reduces the risk, and a cold-water rinse with a splash of vinegar can help set the color a little.

How should the right size be chosen?

Comparing the listed flat measurements with a favorite well-fitting pair is more reliable than going by tag size alone. For unsanforized fabric, many buyers choose a size that feels slightly snug at first, since it relaxes with wear and a soak will tighten it. The size chart shows the measurements before shrinkage.

How often should it be washed?

Washing as rarely as practical keeps the deep color and sharper fades longer. Spot cleaning handles small marks, and airing it out overnight helps with odors. When a full wash is needed, cold water, inside out, with a mild detergent and air drying works best. Hot water and tumble dryers speed up fading and can cause extra shrinkage.

Can the length be altered without losing the original look?

Yes, though the method matters. A tailor who offers a chain-stitch or original-hem hemming service can keep the rolled, uneven look that develops at the cuff. A standard straight hem works too but looks flatter. For unsanforized fabric, the soak should be done before measuring, since the length changes afterward.
